Martha Loizeaux

I am a Marine Science Teacher and Field Lab Guru who opens students’ minds and enriches their lives by taking them outdoors to learn authentic science.  I know from firsthand observation that real learning often happens outside the classroom.

I have assisted scientists as a “Teacher Under the Sea”  through Florida International University and "Teacher at Sea" through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  I led the development of OSCS's global learning program which includes trips to Panama, Belize, Mexico, and Chile.  I took a brief break from teaching in fall 2023 to conduct educational research as a partnership with an indigenous community in the mountains of Colombia through a Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching research grant.  

I am trained as a Florida Master Naturalist, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, Merchant Mariner (Captain), and Florida Elementary Education and Middle Grades Science Teaching certified teacher.  I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Master of Arts in Biology from Miami University.

My absolute favorite thing about working at Ocean Studies is having the opportunity to learn from all of the smart, strong, inquisitive, unique, creative, brave and extraordinary children that join us on this journey!

When I am not driving a school bus or towing kids on kayaks, I can be found traveling with my two teenage sons, doing yoga, or dancing the Irish jig.
